SOME THINGS DESERVE A CLOSER LOOK.

Space is immense.
This part fits right here.

The detector assembly at the heart of Roman’s Wide Field Instrument, recreated at nominal 1:1 scale. A little of that ambition, at approximately full size.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE OBJECT

Two instruments.
Two ways to see.

Roman carries two instruments. The Wide Field Instrument (WFI) is its primary science instrument: a panoramic camera whose 18 detectors survey the sky in visible and near-infrared light. Those surveys investigate dark energy, dark matter, and worlds beyond our solar system.

The Coronagraph Instrument is a separate technology demonstration. It suppresses starlight to reveal faint planets and disks around nearby stars.

This illuminated model represents WFI’s detector assembly, with its rear electronics and cold baffle. Our upcoming Coronagraph model celebrates Roman’s other instrument.

What does nominal 1:1 mean? +

The detector layout follows published dimensions at approximately full size. Surrounding mechanical details are reconstructed from photographs, with adaptations for printing and illumination. This is a scale reconstruction of WFI’s detector assembly; the complete Wide Field Instrument is much larger.

What arrives at my door? +

A fully assembled, illuminated WFI detector display model with rear electronics rack and cold baffle. The reference can is not included.

When will it ship? +

Estimated shipping is four weeks after your order. Shipping is available to the United States and Canada. Shipping charges and taxes are calculated at checkout.

A note on the model and images +

All images are digital renders of the development model, with illustrative material and lighting treatments. Final finish may vary. This independent educational display model is inspired by public NASA and STScI references. It is not flight hardware or a NASA-issued or endorsed product.
